7 Tips for Parents of Kids in Jiu-Jitsu | Stride Martial Arts Excelsior Springs

If you’re a parent considering or already enrolled in kids Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, you probably want to know how to best support your child’s journey. At Stride Martial Arts and Fitness in Excelsior Springs, Missouri, we work closely with families every day and have put together 7 practical tips for parents of kids in Jiu-Jitsu.

7 Tips for Parents of Kids in Jiu-Jitsu

  1. Focus on the Long Game Don’t get caught up in how fast your child earns stripes or belts. The biggest benefits — confidence, discipline, focus, and resilience — develop gradually through consistent training.
  2. Let Them Struggle It’s natural to want to help when things get hard, but allowing your child to work through challenges on the mat is one of the most valuable lessons Jiu-Jitsu teaches.
  3. Celebrate Effort, Not Just Results Praise your child for showing up, working hard, being respectful, and being a good training partner. This builds a healthy mindset about growth and improvement.
  4. Make It Fun at Home Turn training into family time with simple games like practicing guard positions, movement drills, or light rolling. Keeping it playful helps kids stay excited about class.
  5. Communicate with the Coaches Let us know if your child is shy, struggling with something specific, or having an especially good week. Open communication helps us support your child better.
  6. Let the Coaches Lead During Class Trust the instructors to guide your child while they’re on the mat. Avoid calling out instructions or corrections from the sidelines. This helps your child focus, builds respect for the coaches, and allows them to learn independently.
  7. Lead by Example Kids pay attention to what you do more than what you say. Stay consistent with your own training and show up with a positive attitude — they’ll follow your lead.
